Job 8:21
He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.
Ecclesiastes 7:3
Sorrow is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart.

Oh lovely! Well, what I think is that sorrow is good for the heart because it is refining. When we experience sorrow our heart changes. Sorrow helps us think about life in an eternal mindset. Unfortunately, a lot of life on Earth is filled with sadness, sorrow and suffering. I think that when Solomon was writing this he was trying to communicate the importance of reflection that a sad heart can experience. Solomon is not saying happiness is bad! That's important to know. He is saying that having a peace that is not based on your circumstance is important. Usually when we experience pain we are brought to God. I do think that having a joy in life is amazing and that the Lord loves when His children laugh! So don't be discouraged! I love you Mad! I think this is a great question.
ReplyDelete:) thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Chica.
ReplyDeleteYes... it DOES seem confusing.
Yazz's answer is great.
There are also a few more interesting verses:
Ecclesiastes also says that there is a time for everything 3:4 says there's "a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance"
In Luke 6:21, Jesus says "Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh."
And then later in Luke 6:25 he says "Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep."
Pro 31:25 is talking about a noble wife (the "ideal" woman) and it says "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come."
Interesting!
But we KNOW that God made laughter... and really, is there ANYTHING sweeter than a baby's belly laugh? I think there will indeed be a LOT of laughing in HEAVEN and maybe more tears on Earth. On Earth our great joy & fulfillment may be found only in loving God and loving others.
Love you.
